Mohammad Ashraful Biography




Mohammad Ashraful is a naturally gifted and immensely talented cricketer from Bangladesh. He is a Right handed top-order batsman, part-time right arm leg break bowler. Ashraful played for Bangladesh National Cricket Team. He is the wonder boy of Bangladesh cricket. Some says Ashraful is the first world class cricketer that Bangladesh have produced. It is such a joy to watch his batting when he is on top of his game. He is a natural stroke maker, plays adventurous and eye catching shots.  On his day, he can single handedly win a match. He played important roles in some crucial victories of Bangladesh cricket team.

However, Mohammad Ashraful has not done justice to his talent. He was inconsistent from the very beginning of his career, and it did not changed much over the years. Someone of his calibre should have achieved much more in his career. A batting average of 24.00 in test and 22.23 in ODI does not reflect his immense talent. He is an entertainer, but seriously underachiever.

Ashraful is often been criticized for his poor shot selection. So many times he got out playing ugly shots when he was looking so good. Lack of self-confidence was another major factor to his failure.

Mohammad Ashraful's Career

Mohammad Ashraful started playing cricket at a very early age. He went to the academy which was run by veteran  coach Wahidul Gani. Ashraful made his first-class debut in 2000. He showed a glimpse of promise in his debut season. Bangladesh was struggling in the international cricket at that time, there was lack of quality players. So, it was evident that Ashraful will get a call-up at some point of time. It didn't took long. Ashraful made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2001. In the same year,  he made his test debut against Sri Lanka. He scored a hundred in the 2nd innings, and became the youngest player to score a test hundred. After this hundred, he became a superstar overnight. Peoples expectations were high of him, but he crumbled under pressure. He was dropped from the team after a series of bad performances.

Mohammad Ashraful represented Bangladesh in the 2003 cricket world cup. He had a very poor world cup, scored 71 runs with an average of 14.20.
In 2004, Ashraful got his 2nd test century, scored an unbeaten 158 against India. Ashraful scored his maiden ODI hundred against Australia in 2005, which helped Bangladesh winning the match.

In 2007 world cup, Ashraful played an outstanding knock of 87 against South Africa, this innings was full of innovation. Bangladesh was able to beat South Africa for the first time with the help of this outstanding knock.

After the world cup, Ashraful was appointed as captain of the team. But his inconsistency and poor form didn't let him enjoy the captaincy. After the 2009 T20 world cup, he was axed from the captaincy. It was hoped that his batting form will improve with the release of pressure, but that didn't happen. Ashraful was dropped from the squad several times, but everytime he fought back. Ashraful was part of World Cup 2011 squad.

In 2010, Ashraful scored 190 against Sri Lanka in the first test of the series, which is his career best.

Spot-fixing controversy


Ashraful was accused of being involved in match fixing during BPL 2013. He confessed about his involvement. Bangladesh Cricket Board was quick to react, initially Ashraful was banned from all kind of cricket for 8 years, then it was reduced to 5 years.

Personal Life


Ashraful married Anika Taslima Orchi on Decembe 11, 2015. Orchi is a student of BBA.
